ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini for Small Business: Which to Try First

ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini for small business owners: a plain, fair look at what each AI is good at, current plan prices, and which one to try first.

You keep hearing three names: ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Your nephew swears by one. A podcast pushes another. Your accountant uses the third. You just want to know which one to try, and whether you have to pay.

Here's the good news: all three are good, all three have a free version, and the skills you learn in one carry over to the others. You can't really pick wrong.

This guide is a plain, fair comparison for business owners. You'll learn what each one does best, what the plans cost today, and an easy test to find the one that fits how you work. Prices and plan names change often. Everything below was checked on the official pricing pages on October 7, 2026.

The plain answer: start with the one that fits your day

If you want a one-line answer, here it is:

  • If you live in Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Drive, try Gemini first. It's made by Google and works inside those tools.
  • If you write a lot (emails, quotes, policies, website pages) or work with long documents, try Claude first. Many people like its writing style and how it handles long files.
  • If you want the most familiar name with the widest mix of features, try ChatGPT first. It's the one most people have heard of, and it has lots of how-to help online.

Then use the free version for a week before paying for anything. If it saves you time every day, the paid plan is usually worth it. If it doesn't, try one of the others.

One note so you know where we stand: we use more than one AI tool to run our own small business, and we build with several of them for clients. We don't get paid by any of these companies.

What each one is good at

All three can draft emails, answer questions, summarize documents, brainstorm ideas, help with spreadsheets, and read photos you upload. They are more alike than different. But each has its own strengths.

ChatGPT (made by OpenAI)

  • The best-known name. Lots of tutorials and examples online.
  • A wide set of features in one app: chat, voice conversations, image creation, file uploads, and web search.
  • Good all-rounder for everyday office tasks.

Claude (made by Anthropic)

  • Known for clear, natural writing that's easy to shape to your own voice.
  • Handles long documents well, like contracts, manuals, or a big pile of notes.
  • Tends to be careful and will often say when it isn't sure.

Gemini (made by Google)

  • Built into Google's apps. On some plans it works right inside Gmail and Google Docs.
  • Handy if your business already runs on Google Workspace or a Google account.
  • Good at quick answers that draw on Google search.

Your results will depend more on how you ask than on which tool you pick. Our guide on how to write a good AI prompt helps with all three.

What they cost (checked October 7, 2026)

Each company has a free plan and several paid ones. Here are the plans most small businesses would look at, from the official pages. Prices are in US dollars per month.

ChatGPT (official pricing)

  • Free: $0.
  • Go: $8 a month in the US, a lower-cost step up from Free.
  • Plus: $20 a month.
  • Pro: starts at $100 a month, for very heavy use.
  • Business: priced per person, for teams that want shared workspaces and admin controls.

Claude (official pricing)

  • Free: $0.
  • Pro: $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month if you pay for a year up front ($200).
  • Max: starts at $100 a month, for very heavy use.
  • Team: $25 per person a month billed monthly, or $20 billed yearly, for the standard seat.

Gemini (official plans)

  • Free: $0.
  • Google AI Plus: $4.99 a month.
  • Google AI Pro: $19.99 a month. Includes Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and extra storage.
  • Google AI Ultra: starts at $99.99 a month, for very heavy use.

For most owners, the free plan is enough to learn on. When you're ready, the roughly $20-a-month plans (ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, or Google AI Pro) are where most people land. You almost never need the $100-plus plans. For the bigger picture of what AI costs a business, see our guide on how much AI costs a small business in 2026.

A before/after example

Here is a typical three-person cleaning company.

Before: The owner signs up for all three tools after reading a news story. She pays for two of them. She uses each one a couple of times, gets so-so answers, and forgets about them. Two months later, she has spent money and saved no time.

After: She picks one tool, the free version. Every day for a week, she gives it one real task: a reply to a customer email, a checklist for a move-out clean, a polite note about a late payment, and a description for her Google profile. By Friday she knows what it's good at. She upgrades to one $20 plan because it saves her time every day. She tries a second tool only for one task, comparing the same prompt side by side.

The tool didn't change. How she used it did.

Where AI helps, and where an AI agent goes further

An AI chat tool (any of these three) is like a very fast assistant sitting next to you. You ask, it answers, you copy and paste. You stay in control, and you do the clicking. Our list of ChatGPT first tasks for small business works in Claude and Gemini too.

An AI agent is a tool that takes steps on its own, inside rules you set. (See what an AI agent is.) Instead of you pasting an email into a chat, an agent reads the inbox, drafts the reply, and puts it in a queue for you to approve. Agents can be built on top of any of these three AI models. That's the kind of thing we set up for owners. You can browse examples in our automation catalog.

Try this today: the one-week side-by-side test

This takes about 20 minutes to start.

  1. Pick two of the three tools. Make a free account on each.
  2. Pick one real task you do every week, like answering a common customer question.
  3. Paste the same prompt (below) into both tools.
  4. Compare the answers. Which one sounds more like you? Which one needed fewer fixes?
  5. Repeat with a different task each day for a week. Keep the one you reached for most.
Copy this prompt
I own a small [type of business] in [town]. A customer just sent me this message:

[paste the customer's message, with their name and personal details removed]

Write a reply that:
- Sounds friendly and plain, like a local owner, not a big company.
- Answers their question using only these facts: [your facts].
- Is under 120 words.
- Ends with one clear next step.

Then tell me one thing I could change in my process so this question comes up less often.

The honest limits

  • All three make mistakes. They can state wrong facts with total confidence. Check anything that matters: prices, dates, laws, numbers.
  • None of them know your business unless you tell them. Give them your facts in the prompt, or they'll fill gaps with guesses.
  • Be careful with private data. Don't paste customer card numbers, passwords, or health information. Check each tool's data settings. Business and team plans usually have stronger privacy controls. Our checklist on AI and customer data walks through it.
  • Features change fast. What's true this month may be different next month. That's why we date our price checks.
  • No legal, tax, or medical answers you can rely on alone. Use AI to prepare questions, then ask your lawyer or accountant.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI is best for a small business?

There isn't one winner. Gemini fits best if you live in Google's apps. Claude is a strong pick for writing and long documents. ChatGPT is a good all-rounder with the most features in one place. Try the free versions and keep the one you actually use.

Do I need to pay for ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini?

No, not to start. All three have free plans that are plenty for learning. Pay for one about $20-a-month plan when you're using it daily and hitting the free limits.

Can I use more than one?

Yes, and some owners do. But paying for several at once usually isn't worth it when you're starting. Get good at one first.

Is my business information safe in these tools?

It depends on the plan and your settings. Don't paste anything you wouldn't want stored, like card numbers or passwords. Check each tool's privacy settings, and see our AI data safety checklist.

The bottom line

The best AI tool is the one you'll open every day. Pick one, give it real work for a week, and decide with your own results, not someone else's opinion.

If you'd rather have someone set up AI that works in the background for you, look at our plans. We're a real family business in Mesa, Arizona, and if you have a question, the owner, Johnathon Lawson, answers support himself at [email protected].
